Health Benefits of Black Currants

November 6th, 2009

blackcurrantBlack currants are one the of the key ingredients in Youth Juice. As with the other ingredients in YJ, these black currants have many health benefits.

In particular, black currants are renowned for their high content of Vitamin C (a powerful antioxidant), GLA (Gamma-Linoleic Acid, a very rare Omega-6 essential fatty acid) and potassium. They have been shown to have twice the potassium of bananas, four times the vitamin C of oranges, and twice the antioxidants of blueberries.

In addition, they contain anthocyanins. These natural compounds found in berries are very potent antioxidants. Anthocyanins inhibit certain enzymes in the body and reduce inflammation allowing for an effect that is similar to aspirin or ibuprofen. As a results, many people choose black currant juice over the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications to help with conditions like arthritis.

The fruit juice of black currant contains other substances that may have anti-cancer properties and well as providing essential fatty acids, fatty acids that the body cannot produce on its own.

To summarize, black currants have been proven to have health benefits including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects as may be able to help prevent cancer. This combined with the other powerful ingredients in Youth Juice are truly remarkable for health and well being.
